What Happens In Elevators

Office ElevatorsComedian Steven Wright had a very funny routine about elevators. He would talk about summers with his brother visiting his grandfather. Every day, he said, his grandfather would have them stand next to each other and stare straight ahead at the wall in front of them. Wright finishes – “He called it elevator practice.” It may be a silly joke, but what else really happens in elevator? We get in and get out. However, a recent survey shows that people actually do some strange stuff in elevators.

According to CareerBuilder, many office building elevators have weird happenings beyond just staring straight forward and minding your own business. The article says:

Workers shared the following real-life examples of weird behaviors they observed in work elevators:

  • “Pantsing” a co-worker
  • Changing a baby’s diaper
  • Flossing teeth
  • Clipping fingernails
  • Fist fighting
  • Showing someone a rash and asking for a diagnosis
  • Moving the entire contents of a co-worker’s office into the elevator, including the desk
  • A woman with her arms full of papers using her head to keep the doors from closing on her
  • Dancing throughout the ride

The survey, which was conducted online, had almost 4,000 respondents, so it’s pretty safe to say that these answers are pretty accurate. The respondents also discussed what habits of elevator riders bothered them the most. Not surprisingly, talking on a cell phone topped the list – here are a few others:

  • Standing too close when there is plenty of room in the elevator
  • Squeezing into an already crowded elevator
  • Not stepping off the elevator to let other people out

Have you ever seen anything strange happen in an elevator? What is the one thing your co-workers do in elevators that bothers you the most?
