How Does a Dumbwaiter Work?

dumbwaiterA dumbwaiter can be an easy way to transport items from one floor to another if going up and down stairs is difficult. Dumbwaiters are popular in multi-floor restaurants where climbing stairs while carrying plates could be a challenge. Dumbwaiters are also useful in homes for transporting heavy or bulky items, such as groceries or laundry baskets, from one level to another.

Dumbwaiters come in two types: manual and electric. Traditional manual dumbwaiters have aluminum tracks installed along the corners of the shaft. The tracks run from the lower floor to at least halfway up to the top floor. A rope or cable pulls the dumbwaiter cart from one level to the other. Some dumbwaiters go down to the basement of a building. When the cart reaches the top level, manual locks engage to hold it in place.

Electric dumbwaiters operate on the same principle. The cart runs along tracks attached to the walls of the shaft. When a button is pressed, a motor moves the cart to the desired level and then locks it in place once it has reached its destination.

Nationwide Lifts offers a line of Jeeves electric dumbwaiters designed for both residential and commercial use that operate with the simple press of a button. The Jeeves dumbwaiter is available in three models that can transport 75, 125, or 250 pounds in a home. The Jeeves Pro commercial dumbwaiter can move 125, 250, or 500 pounds from floor to floor in a restaurant or other business. The Jeeves RST dumbwaiter is designed specifically for the food service industry. It includes removable shelves and can carry up to 250 pounds. All of these dumbwaiters are also available in custom sizes.

If you need to move large or heavy items from one floor to another in your home or business, but carrying them up and down stairs is a challenge, consider installing a dumbwaiter from Nationwide Lifts. We can help you choose the dumbwaiter model that is right for your needs.
